The park and gardens
A place for walks and discoveries.
Designed for walks and entertainment, the Domaine du Château de Seneffe park is also an outdoor exhibition venue, an event space where visitors are seduced by the beauty of the site and the magic of the events taking place there. every spring and summer.
Artists of ephemeral international renown of space for exhibitors of their works each year. Each time, a new theme and new encounters between artists and the public.
A green setting, an open space
Restored in the spirit of the first occupants, the Domain Park Castle Seneffe stretches over an area of 22 ha. The original, regular lines are enhanced by a plantation scenery that evokes the soul of yesteryear, but whose harmonization takes into account the lessons of the past. At the back of the castle, the large ornamental lake with two arms, is punctuated by a jet of water 15 meters high. Between the castle and the large ornamental lake, cradle lime trees extend the galleries located in the main courtyard. At the back of the Theater, there is a more "wild" area with various species. The pond has regained its original appearance and is extended by a drop shape. A small bridge spans the pond to reach the romantic island.
The nature in the park
In addition to its great architectural interest, Seneffe is also the domain of a nature sometimes constrained, sometimes released.
As well as being of great architectural interest, the Seneffe estate also abounds with nature, both restrained and free.
Many different communities of plants and animals live in the shelter of the surrounding wall, which protects them from the outside. In winter, snowdrops, and in spring, carpets of bluebells flourish under the beech trees, as nowhere else in the region. In the high branches of the ashes, limes and sycamores you can hear tits, robins, redstarts, hedge sparrows and nuthatches. A wide variety of berry trees has been planted close to the aviary to attract these birds from the woods and parkland. The edge of the pond is home to aquatic plants and frogs. And even though you might not come across any large animals on your path, you may see the white tail of a rabbit, the sharp silhouette of a weasel or, late in the evening, a hedgehog in a prickly ball.
Landscape part of the Park
Work started in 1780 on the creation of a landscape garden between the Theater garden and the back part of the park. But the original geometrical structure was not changed.
While the geometrical style had dominated Europe since the Middle Ages, from around 1720 the English started to develop an unorthodox, very varied style, incorporating exotic species. In response to a desire for freedom and a return to nature, this new “landscape” style had reached the whole of Europe by around 1775 and was all the rage the next century as well.
Designed by the Parisian designer Brongniart, the landscape garden at Seneffe had a stream, which winds and cascades from the back of the park to a pond with a small island.
Many new species were planted for this, including cypress, ebony, American larch, Scots pine, catalpa, Virginia maple, thuja, magnolia, etc.
